Appeals to Allegheny County Property Assessments

  • Every property owner in the county has the right to appeal. The appeal form is available online from the Office of Property Assessments Appeals Division.
  • The appeal must be based on market value, not ability to pay tax.
  • There is no fee involved.
  • Use attachments to support the appeal: cover letter, property information, repair estimates, photos.
  • The property owner may designate an agent to represent him at the hearing.
  • Deadline to appeal for 2008 was March 31. A special appeal must be filed within 30 days of notice letter of assessment change.
  • More information is available online at the Office of Property Assessments Appeals Division.
  • You may also want to consult the Division's Rules and Regulations Governing Appeals and Tips for Assessment Appeal Hearings.

Recent Sales of Property in Your Neighborhood

Use the map tab on a property record in the Real Estate database to identify nearby property sales for January 2002 through June 2003 and 2003 appeals.

An excellent web site to identify more recent sales of property in your neighborhood is Domania.

  • Use Domania's "Home Price Check" to begin the search.
  • Enter street address and zip code. Choose neighborhood to retrieve sales on your street and surrounding streets.
  • To view entire list of sales from 1987 to the present, you must sign up (free) and choose a login and password.

Tax Abatements and Exemptions

Allegheny County and the City of Pittsburgh offer abatements and exemptions for county and city property taxes.

  • The Allegheny County Office of Property Assessments outlines these tax relief programs on their web site.
  • Residents of other municipalities in Allegheny County should contact their local officials to inquire about additional abatements and/or exemptions.
